On August 1st, 2022, the starting signal for the construction of a sewage sludge drying plant was given at the location of the MUEG VEZ II plant in Espenhain. The MUEG location VEZ has favorable conditions for the operation of the drying plant due to the existing infrastructure and the direct connection to the A72 motorway. The plant is intended for the treatment of pre-dewatered municipal sewage sludge (ASN 19 08 05). The plant capacity is a maximum of 18,000 t/a in input. The dried sewage sludge is fed to thermal recycling as granules. To provide the energy required for drying, the sewage sludge drying plant is equipped with a wood firing system. The wood firing system is approved for the use of wood chips from natural used wood and from waste wood of categories AI and AII according to AltholzV. The construction of the sewage sludge drying plant leads to a further revitalization of the Espenhain site and an expansion of the customer portfolio in the field of treatment and recycling of municipal sewage sludge. The system also serves to ensure the permanent disposal security of the MUEG sewage treatment plant. Completion and commissioning of the plant is planned for March 2023.
